Dr. Shivam Om Mittal, MD, FAAN, DSc is an American Board-Certified Neurologist and internationally recognized Movement Disorders Specialist. He serves as Section Head of Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, ranked No.1 in the Middle East. As the first fellowship-trained movement disorder neurologist in Abu Dhabi, he founded the UAE’s first Comprehensive Movement Disorders Center and established the nation’s first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) program, now the largest in the region. Dr. Mittal completed his neurology residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio, followed by advanced fellowship training at Mayo Clinic, consistently ranked the No.1 hospital globally. He further pursued post-doctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine and holds a Diploma in Clinical Neurology from University College London. He has also completed an MBA in Clinical Leadership from University of Birmingham, strengthening his expertise in healthcare strategy and institutional leadership. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and currently serves as an Executive Committee Member of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society – Asia Oceanic Section (MDS-AOS), and Chair of the Middle East Working Group. Dr. Mittal is widely recognized for innovation in advanced therapies. He designed the first customized botulinum toxin protocol for tremor management, internationally known as the “Yale Technique,” improving safety and treatment outcomes in Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. He has led multiple clinical trials, introduced advanced device-based therapies across the Middle East, and built integrated multidisciplinary care models. His leadership in establishing the national DBS program earned him the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Innovation Award (AED 250,000 ), which he directed entirely toward Parkinson’s disease research initiatives. He has also been conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) and the title of Professor of Eminence for his global contributions to neurological care, research, and education. Dr. Mittal has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, edited major academic texts, delivered more than 100 invited lectures worldwide, and mentored neurologists internationally in botulinum toxin and advanced movement disorder therapies. His work focuses on building world-class neurosciences programs and translating innovation into measurable patient impact.
The Middle East Working Group (MEWG) was created to provide a forum for discussion of movement disorder topics of interest for Middle East members and to direct education efforts when assigned by the AOS Leadership.
MDS-AOS aims to facilitate communication between clinicians and researchers in the region; disseminate updated knowledge about Movement Disorders; improve quality of life and independence of movement disorders patients and caregivers; and promote research in Movement Disorders within the region. MDS-AOS is honored to represent the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society in the Asian and Oceanian region.
