New Zealand
I am a veterinarian with over a decade of experience in New Zealand’s public sector, specialising in food safety, animal welfare and export systems. My career has been shaped by a deep connection to land and animals - from my roots in Borneo to the rolling farmlands of Waikato and the rivers of Manawatū. This grounding continues to inform my approach to sustainable practice, animal welfare, and the wellbeing of both animals and people. Across roles in Verification Services, Animal Welfare, Policy and Trade, I have developed a strong understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework, including the Animal Products Act, Food Act, Biosecurity Act and Animal Welfare Act. My work sits at the intersection of practical veterinary decision-making and system-level oversight, with a particular interest in animal health and export. As a veterinarian, I continue to apply clinical judgement in complex, real-world settings, while also contributing through team leadership, mentoring and supporting the development of emerging veterinary professionals. I value creating environments where people can grow, think critically and deliver high-quality outcomes. Guided by manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship), I believe in the importance of strong relationships and shared responsibility. I am committed to advancing Aotearoa’s veterinary and agricultural sectors in a way that supports our people, animals and environment.
Currently on secondment managing the Animal Health and Export group within the Animal Health and Welfare Directorate at MPI’s Agriculture Investment Services (AIS).
As an Official Veterinarian, I lead technical operations at an export facility in the Manawatu, overseeing veterinarians across multiple shifts. I have strengthened my leadership capability through MPI’s Management and Leadership training, with a strong focus on aligning team performance with organisational strategy.
I was seconded to manage the Export Systems Team within AIS's Animal Health and Welfare Directorate. This role drew on my technical expertise in export systems, a deep understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework including the APA and AWA, and my leadership experience, complemented by my international background in policy and trade.
In my diplomatic posting to China, I served as a liaison addressing technical market access issues and fostering trade between New Zealand and China. I assisted in developing strategic approaches to engage with Chinese authorities on agricultural policy, conducted research on market trends, and participated in high-level negotiations. I directly reported to the New Zealand Ambassador and MPI's Deputy-Director General of China Relations, ensuring effective communication to advance New Zealand’s trade and economic objectives in the region.
