Between March and May 2025, I had the opportunity to join a medical cooperation project in Nairobi, Kenya, working as a pediatrician in collaboration with the German non-profit organization German Doctors e.V.. This mission allowed me to contribute to a pediatric health center located in a densely populated slum area, where access to medical care is limited and basic health needs often go unmet.
During my ten years of service as the school medical advisor of the DSB, various health-related projects were implemented in collaboration with the school administration, the board, and the school nurses: restructuring of the nurse´s office in the kindergarten and school, regulation of medication administration, management of students with chronic illnesses, and the establishment of a commission to advise the school cafeteria. The pandemic posed a unique challenge to the DSB as an educational institution. In addition to its educational mission, the school also had to take on tasks of prevention and epidemiological control of Covid-19 cases. In this context, the DSB played an outstanding role as a link between the public health system and the students, teachers, and families. Under my medical leadership, an interdisciplinary commission directed the necessary measures over a period of two years to maintain school operations.
