In my current work as assistant professor at the Environmental Systems Analysis group at Wageningen University I develop leading-edge analysis tools supporting nature conservation practices. My work focuses on harmonizing biodiversity data from diverse monitoring techniques in order to detect undesired trends in populations, communities and ecosystems at an early stage. I develop models and analysis tools to enrich raw data with ecological context to facilitate decision making in biodiversity conservation. I contribute to novel developments in science by exploring how digital twin technology can be applied in biodiversity conservation, to support monitoring and evidence-based decision making. Among others, digital twins can help to: detect ecosystems’ states and trends in real-time; link trends with environmental and anthropogenic drivers and pressures; reflect on information gaps; and close the gap between scientists, policy makers and natural resource managers. As a pioneer in social-ecological-systems modelling, I use my creativity, determination, and multidisciplinary interests in bringing digital twin design principles to environmental science. In my role as teacher I coordinate the course Environmental Systems Analysis: Methods and Applications, which prepares MSc students for doing a thesis at our chair group. In this course, students learn how to work with a wide range of systems analysis tools to solve complex environmental problems, taking into account diverse stakeholders with potentially conflicting interests. Furthermore, I provide lectures, tutorials and group work supervision in various courses, and I supervise dozens of MSc thesis students and internship students.
