About

Deepika Manoharan BMedSci (Hons), MBChB, MSc, PGCert (ClinRes), MRCP(UK), ESE(Neph) Canadian at heart. Identical Twin. British-trained/Edinburgh-trained doctor. I am a Resident Physician and a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) in Nephrology and Medical Education at Newcastle University. Following training in Internal Medicine, I am pursuing a dual specialization/fellowship in both Nephrology and General Internal Medicine (GIM)/Acute Medicine (dual CCT/fellowship program in Nephrology and GIM), with an additional interests in medical education, renal transplantation, CKD/DKD, genetic kidney disease, and interventional nephrology. I pursued medicine (6-year BScMedSci/MD programme) in United Kingdom's top medical schools directly after completing my high school education in Toronto (GPA 4.0). I did my pre-clinical training at University of St Andrews, School of Medicine (BMedSci Hons First Class) with a honours dissertation in virology and influenza drug development (GPA 4.0). I continued my clinical training at University of Edinburgh, School of Medicine (MB ChB), with final year electives at University of Toronto in nephrology and pulmonology (GPA 3.95). I further completed a postgraduate Masters degree (MSc) in Internal Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (GPA 4.0) as a RCPE Scholar. Throughout my medical education, I have been actively involved in both clinical and laboratory medical research. My passion for research still continues with strong interests in nephrology, particularly, AKI, diabetic kidney disease, transplant medicine, and genetic kidney disease. Currently, in parallel to my residency training (dual specialization in General Internal Medicine and Nephrology), I aim to become a nephrologist with special interests in AKI, hereditary kidney disease, transplant medicine, CKD/DKD, haemodialysis, and interventional nephrology. I aim to set up AKI outreach programs and CKD centres (with vascular access facilities for haemodialysis) in underprivileged areas that facilitate and promote top evidence-based care. I believe that by bridging medicine and business together, I have the potential to implement positive changes to a large healthcare system and touch upon the lives of millions, both locally and internationally. At the heart of everything I do is a lifelong devotion to medicine and service. My identical twin sister, Dr Divya Manoharan (Clinical / Radiation Oncologist), and I share this calling — and together, we hope not just to practise medicine, but to leave a lasting impact on the lives we touch and the field we love.
