An ongoing interest in artist film, performance practice and the development of works around masculine paradigms and cyclical patterns of gendered representation. Qualified lecturer, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and course leader of MA Fine Art and MA by Research in Art & Design at the Wolverhampton School of Art. Artist in Residence for Ikon Gallery at HMP Grendon, the only wholly therapeutic prison in Europe. This project culminated in both a solo exhibition of films and residency works at Ikon Gallery in Autumn 2023 and a curatorial role in an exhibition of Marie-Louise Von Motesiczky’s work exhibited concurrently alongside a series of publications, conferences, and public programme events. These outputs will be collated in preparation for REF 2028.

UAL Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, PhD Fine Art Practice Thesis Title: “Flawed Masculinities: “Rupturing” 1950s/60s/70s British TV Sitcom via a Performance-led Interdisciplinary Arts Practice.” This research is an investigation into the construction of masculine gender stereotypes, explored through a process of a performance-led visual arts practice that incorporates the use of interdisciplinary approaches. Disciplines and fields include: film-making, performance practice, comedy studies, performance art studies, television studies, gender studies and cultural studies. The resulting dialogue between historical source material and contemporary artwork creates a critical interrogation of culturally constructed gendered stereotypes within a specific television entertainment genre. The research journey is carefully logged (sketchbooks, digital portfolio) and analysed (written thesis) in accordance with a reflective, practice-based, methodology.
Ikon’s exhibition features a number of Dean Kelland’s new films, prints and sketchbooks that reimagine the psychoanalytic dialogue that has occurred between Pop Art and Prison Art since the 1960s. Referencing figures from popular culture such as Elvis and David Bowie, Kelland interrogates male identity and flawed notions of masculinity. It is the culmination of Kelland’s four-year artist’s residency at HMP Grendon (2019-2023), funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust.
