As a Project Engineer, I was deeply involved in Continuous Improvement (CI) and Six Sigma projects. My role involved diagnosing and implementing solutions that resulted in significant cost savings of over £1M for the business within a span of 12 months. Working hand in hand with the Quality Manager, I was instrumental in upholding Aerospace quality standards, assisting with audits, and actively participating in Supplier, Aerospace Business Relationship (SABRE) meetings. The role was particularly demanding as the company was navigating a transitional period. To ensure the smooth continuation of commercial testing, I willingly took on additional responsibilities. These included overseeing up to 5 projects concurrently, with tasks ranging from technical troubleshooting to quality improvements such as designing a new testing database system. This multi-faceted role was both a fantastic and rewarding challenge. My problem-solving abilities were frequently called upon by the Technical Director to address a wide array of technical and commercial challenges. A key part of my role was effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring tests were carried out according to specified standards and quality guidelines. In collaboration with the Quality Manager, I also assisted in preparing for both internal and external customer audits, which was essential to maintain our accreditations.
Thesis Title: "Advanced Molybdate Based Conversion Coatings for Zn Surfaces" During my PhD at Loughborough University, I delved deep into the Materials Science field, focusing on the development of eco-friendly alternatives to hexavalent chromium for use in conversion coatings. This study was prompted by the recent environmental legislation enacted by the EU, specifically the 'WEEE', 'RoHS', and 'ELV' directives. My research focused on enhancing molybdate conversion coatings for application on Zn and Zn-alloy surfaces, with molybdate identified as a less toxic and equally efficient replacement for hexavalent chromium. The investigation led to the discovery of a composite system. By adding accelerators and nanoparticles, I developed a coating with corrosion resistance comparable to the industry-standard chromate reference. I utilized a range of techniques for performance analysis and full characterization of the coatings, including Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) and Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) testing, along with extensive use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDXA), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Additionally, by examining partially corroded samples to determine failure modes, I gleaned insights that helped further enhance the coatings. Throughout my PhD, I gained valuable skills and experiences, including: Supervision of laboratory activities and adherence to safety protocols Extensive technical writing, including the preparation of my thesis and related academic papers Project management, from experimental design to data analysis and interpretation Collaboration with fellow researchers and faculty members Presentation of research findings at academic conferences and meetings.
During my time at Sir John Deane's College, where I pursued A-Levels in Physics, Chemistry, and Sports Science, I displayed an exceptional ability to balance academics, athletics, and work responsibilities. As an integral member of the school's rugby team, I displayed not only physical prowess but also a keen understanding of teamwork and strategy. My passion for rugby extended beyond school boundaries as I represented the county and played at senior levels, showcasing my advanced skills and leadership abilities on a broader stage. Simultaneously, I participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, reinforcing my aptitude for time management and diversifying my skill set. These experiences allowed me to broaden my horizons and further develop my interpersonal and problem-solving skills. In addition to my academic and athletic commitments, I demonstrated a strong work ethic and financial responsibility by holding down two part-time jobs. This experience not only taught me the importance of commitment and dedication but also honed my ability to handle multiple responsibilities, providing me with a robust foundation for future pursuits.
