About

Having worked at community colleges for over 30 years, I rose through the ranks to achieve my dream job: teaching English to immigrants. I specialize in teaching composition and reading to advanced ESL students. My doctorate focused on the issues of equity, motivation, college faculty, professional development, leadership, and organizational change. I greatly enjoy leadership roles as a faculty member. My colleagues (faculty & staff) are amazing individuals dedicated to providing new opportunities for a brighter future for every student. I’m a autodidact. I continue to incorporate learning in what I do. A coworker taught me: “If they learn something, they’ll come back. If they don’t, they won’t.” Also what has inspired me comes from an interview which Denzel Washington had when he was playing Macbeth, “I’m more interested in helping others. What I do, what I make, what I made — all of that — is that going to help me on the last day of my life? It’s about, Who have you lifted up? Who have we made better?” (_New York Times_, 5 December 2021) Lastly, my dear mother (mother of 6, grandma to 17, and taught K-3 for 25 years) introduced me to Barbara Colorosa and her “Six Critical Life Messages:” 1) I believe in you 2) I trust you 3) I know you can handle this 4) You are listened to 5) You are cared for 6) You are very important to me https://youtu.be/YNri6hK7Xxk?si=otWFOMO33nOP5EWE These three statements encapsulate what I have striven for while working with and teaching students since 1994 … and they will continue to do so.
