An interesting fact about me is I am probably one of a few people who have performed military services at the White House, guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (1 month), and performed somewhere between 10,000 to 11,000 surgical operations/procedures. My military days are long behind me but they still afford me great memories and friends. I am a general surgeon at Christie Clinic in Champaign, IL, and an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Medical School. I specialize in open, robotic, and laparoscopic operations. I was the first surgeon in Champaign and surrounding communities to introduce laparoscopic cholecystectomies using the single-site da Vinci robotic technique (gallbladder surgery) and was ranked at one point 12th in the nation for volume of these surgical cases performed. Giving patients the best information and technological advice in the field of medicine so they can make informed decisions is of the utmost importance to me. As a sought-after speaker, I have presented in academia and private industries, and I have held leadership positions in various organizations.
Diagnose and treat diseases or injuries requiring surgical care. Medical interest in hepatobiliary, colon and rectal, breast, laparoscopic/robotic surgery and hernia repair.
Observe and confirm compliance of the Center’s medical and laboratory procedures as they affect the safety of the donors and the final product; and provide feedback to the Facility Management Team. Timely review of accumulated data to confirm established donor suitability, donor safety and product safety. Oversee and assist in the certification, training and performance of the center medical staff and center physicians (as applicable) as it pertains to the donor assessment and to compliance with the Company’s standard operating procedures (SOP). Provide additional necessary training, re-certification and corrective actions for the center’s Medical Staff. Provide guidance and certification of the center’s medical staff regarding: a) the appropriate and confidential counseling to individuals with unacceptable test results, and b) the appropriate level of care during unusual or severe donor reactions. Recommend changes and improvements to Standard Operating Procedures. Learn, understand and be independent working with the Donor Management System (DMS) as it relates to the duties and responsibilities of this position. Provide education sessions to the medical staff according to the Company’s standard operating procedures (SOP). Review the QA reports for timely and appropriate actions on moderate complexity procedures for test problems. Review results of moderate complexity tests and proficiency testing by the plasma center staff as required.
