About

Thirty-nine years of scientific research, exploration, and management experience within government and the petroleum industry; twenty-nine years with the Utah Geological Survey and ten years with Placid Oil Company. My research and exploration experience includes surface and subsurface geologic mapping, stratigraphic investigations, and reservoir characterization studies within the Cordilleran fold and thrust belt, Basin and Range Province, Colorado Plateau, Laramide terrains, and strike-slip fault systems as well as international petroleum experience in similar terrains. The research projects and exploration plays were developed by integrating existing data with new data collected through original field work that resulted in published and unpublished geologic maps, reports, and presentations at professional geological meetings. My management experience includes serving as Deputy Director (3 years) and Geologic Manager of the Geologic Hazards Program (1+ year) at the Utah Geological Survey and as Salt Lake District Geologist (6 years) for Placid Oil Company. I have voluntarily served throughout my career in geological association activities and in the general community to promote our profession. I am a registered professional geologist in Utah (PG #5427415-2250) and Certified Petroleum Geology (CPG #6233).

Experience

  • Principal Geologist at Azteca GeoSolution
    Jan 2020 - Present · 6 yrs 6 mos

Specializing in geologic mapping, regional stratigraphic studies, geologic resource studies, and geologic field courses. These studies integrate surface and subsurface data collected in the field using digital methods and analyzed using geologic-based and GIS-based software.

  • Utah Geological Survey (Salt Lake City, Utah)
    • Emeritus Geologist
      Jan 2020 - Present · 6 yrs 6 mos

Continue to move remaining geologic maps and manuscripts through review to publication.

    • Senior Geologist
      Jun 1986 - Dec 2019 · 33 yrs 7 mos

Conduct geologic mapping, regional stratigraphic studies, and energy resource studies. These studies integrate surface and subsurface data collected in the field using digital methods and analyzed using geologic-based and GIS-based software. The results of these studies are published through the Utah Geological Survey and other peer-reviewed publications. Current projects include: 1. Geologic mapping of the Uinta Mountains and Uinta Basin 2. Regional stratigraphic study of Jurassic strata in Utah and surrounding areas 3. Petroleum system evaluation of the central and southern Utah sector of the Cordilleran fold and thrust belt Past projects include: 1. Stratigraphic correlation and carbonate reservoir evaluation for a geothermal assessment of deep sedimentary basins in western Utah and eastern Nevada 2. Regional stratigraphic correlation of the Mississippian Delle Phosphatic Shale. Authored and co-authored more than 100 geologic maps, geologic articles, reports, and abstracts. Reviewed more than 100 manuscripts and geologic maps and served as co-editor on several Utah Geological Association guidebooks.

  • District Geologist at Placid Oil Company
    Jun 1976 - Jun 1986 · 10 yrs 1 mo

Developed and implemented an exploration strategy that evaluated the energy resources of frontier areas of the western United States; generated prospects, conducted regional stratigraphic and structural studies that integrated surface and subsurface mapping techniques and available geophysical data to develop predictive models for different depositional settings and structural regimes; reviewed internal reports for technical accuracy and evaluated submitted reports and prospects; and managed exploration and support staff. Conducted domestic and international field work.
