Biochar drew me in because it sits at this fascinating intersection where climate rigour actually meets real-world impact. I'm an environmental engineer who's spent the last six years working across carbon markets, carbon standards, and CDR—first helping companies understand their footprint, then building the technical side of things. Most recently at Carbon Standards International, I led the development of the Global Biochar C-Sink and Global Artisan C-Sink standards, and worked as Technical Director across the EBC and WBC frameworks. But the work I'm proudest of is the Artisan Standard—designing a pathway for smallholder farmers in the Global South to actually access carbon finance through something as simple as a cookstove or kiln. It's one of the few places where climate solutions and development genuinely overlap. Before that was the unglamorous but essential stuff: LCA and Scope 1–3 carbon footprinting and pyrolysis feasibility studies at SOFIES and dss+. That grounding in actual emissions measurement shapes how I think about everything now. I'm based in Switzerland and open to senior specialist work—whether that's a full-time role in carbon markets, CDR methodology, or standards development, or project-based consulting. Remote or hybrid across Europe works for me.
Dominic Hafner Consulting is an independent sustainability consultancy based in Switzerland, working with SMEs in food and agriculture on GHG accounting, biochar and Net Zero strategy. I work with companies that have started measuring their emissions and need to do something about them — whether that means building a credible decarbonisation roadmap, setting up a biochar project, or integrating carbon credits into an SBTi-aligned strategy. I also act as an advisor and expert for projects in the voluntary carbon market, with a focus on biochar and openness to other carbon removal approaches. Freelance-Auditor for EBC/WBC and Global Biochar C-Sink for CERES-CERT AG.

Conducted dMRV endorsements for biochar CDR projects under the Global Artisan C-Sink, Global Biochar C-Sink and EBC C-Sink frameworks; led technical endorsements of laboratories and pyrolysis system providers across multiple countries. Led and developed a team of staff across the biochar department; served as Product Owner for the Biochar Tool (6 months), defining data flows, documentation requirements, and system logic for carbon removal verification and registration. Represented CSI at international network events and conferences; contributed to pilot projects and business development; guided project developers through the full journey from onboarding to C-Sink registration.
Led product strategy and market adoption for the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard. Managed endorsements for C-Sink project managers and pyrolysis system operators.
