About

I build AI systems that quantify and monitor ecological change at scale. I am a PhD candidate at the University of Pisa working at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, and environmental science, with a focus on ecosystem resilience in marine environments. My work focuses on developing applied AI solutions for real-world ecological challenges, including: • Species detection and classification using deep learning (PyTorch and TF Framework) • Image segmentation and automated percentage cover estimation • Remote sensing and satellite-based ecosystem monitoring. • Multimodal data integration for biodiversity analysis I have built end-to-end pipelines that move from raw ecological data (underwater imagery, quadrat images, satellite data) to deployable AI systems, including APIs and interactive tools for automated analysis. Technical stack: • Python: PyTorch, TensorFlow • YOLOv8/YOLOv9/YOLOv11, SAM, EfficientNet, ViTs • FastAPI, Streamlit, Docker (model deployment) • Geospatial data analysis and visualization I am particularly interested in opportunities in AI projects, research, computer vision, and environmental intelligence, especially where machine learning can be applied to climate, biodiversity, and large-scale ecological monitoring. Open to collaborations and research-driven roles in AI/ML. #MarineBiology #Ecology #ArtificialIntelligence #RemoteSensing #SDG14 #Conservation #DataScience #Python #EnvironmentalSustainability

Experience

  • Doctoral Candidate at Università di Pisa
    Nov 2024 - Present · 1 yr 9 mos

PhD project funded by the EU Horizon project BioEcoOcean and the BioBoost+ project, focusing on biodiversity stability and resilience within complex marine habitat networks. Research responsibiliies include: • Developing computer vision models for marine species detection, classification, and advanced analysis using YOLO-based architectures. • Designing and implementing automated pipelines for ecological image analysis, for derivable ecological metrics. • Applying satellite & high-res aerial imagery remote sensing for large-scale monitoring of macroalgae and seagrass ecosystems • Building ensemble machine learning models to improve detection accuracy and robustness across datasets • Integrating machine learning models into deployable workflow (CI/CD). • Analyzing ecological data to study ecosystem resilience in relations to the effects of climate change. Supervision & Collaboration: Under the guidance of Prof. Lisandro Benedetti-Cecchi, I am part of a collaborative research team engaged in international partnerships, with opportunities to contribute to conservation strategies that address habitat fragmentation and biodiversity resilience.
