Full Professor of International Security and Cooperation at Maastricht University and Director of the Research Programme "Europe: Society, Politics and Global Order" (ESPO). I coordinate large research projects on knowledge security in a geopolitical context (NWO, KNOWSEC-NL, 2027-2031); EU support for global governance reform (Horizon, ENSURED, 2023-2026); the decline and death of international organisations (ERC, NestIOr, 2019-2024)
The interdisciplinary research programme "Europe: Society, Politics and Global Order" (ESPO) consists of 50 academic researchers from political science, history and philosophy and is the largest research programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Responsibilities include setting intellectual priorities, research policy, recruitment and promotion, research colloquium, and research accreditation.
I have carried out research on international organisations and European security in the context of seven major EU-funded research project (ERC, H2020, Horizon Europe, Marie Curie, NWO). This has resulted in three monographs, a textbook, and 40 journal articles. I have also taught various courses on international relations, EU external relations and methods across the European Studies programmes (BA/MA/MSc).
