About

As General Lab Technician I obtain samples of in-process materials and perform analytical tests to detect contaminants. I am also responsible for maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, managing inventory of lab supplies, writing SOPs and communicating with the production team. I participate in the quality management program by providing data at root cause analysis meetings when a non-conformance occurs. I enjoy a mix of structured work and problem solving. I am highly self-motivated and am driven to perform at a high level. Meticulous record keeping and and keeping a clean and organized lab are inherent in my nature.

My role as General Lab Technician is to ensure the quality of our products by performing analytical tests on in-process materials and within the manufacturing environment in order to detect contaminants. On a daily basis I analyze cell culture and media components using a variety of lab equipment and processes including; microscope, near infrared spectrophotometer, bio-analyzer and reading media plates. On a weekly basis I make solutions such as trypic soy broth (TSB) and TSB agar. Equipment calibration and maintenance is performed on both a scheduled and as-needed basis. Keeping track of lab supplies and chemicals is an ongoing task and I requisition new materials as needed to ensure adequate and consistent supply.

In addition to filtering samples and counting colony forming units my duties include functions required to maintain smooth running lab operations such as equipment calibration and cleaning, data management in the LIMS system, internal air and water quality testing, organizing samples and setting up media plates. I take the responsibility of this important work very seriously and work diligently to ensure that I meet the quality standards needed to accurately identify potential issues with the safety of drinking water.

  • Student Research Assistant at Toronto Zoo
    May 2017 - Aug 2017 · 4 mos

I completed over 600 hours as a student research assistant in the Reproductive Physiology Department at the Toronto Zoo. I successfully implemented the lab skills I learned from the Biotechnology Advanced program at Fleming College and I gained even more practical lab skills. I put my organization skills to good use in receiving and logging samples and planning assays. General lab maintenance was a part of my daily routine - replenishing supplies and cleaning lab ware. Other lab maintenance tasks included cleaning and maintaining equipment and taking inventory of biological samples in the freezers and in the cryogenic storage room. In the Endocrinology Lab I worked with biological samples from a variety of animals to extract and analyze hormones using enzyme immunoassays. I entered the data from the assays into Excel spreadsheets so it could be used to analyze reproductive hormones as a part of overall species management. I also gained experience collecting, culturing and passaging cells using sterile technique in the gamete lab. I achieved success with these cell culturing techniques without introducing contamination into my cultures.
