Hello! My name is Angela Delgado. I’m a student at Bowdoin College pursuing a coordinate major in Physics and Environmental Studies with a minor in Urban Studies! My interest in these fields stems from my desire to create a world that is equitable and sustainable. I hope to live to see cities that are self-sufficient, flexible, and centered around the needs of the people that reside in them. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As a first-generation, low-income student of color and daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, I’m no stranger to the injustices that marginalized groups of people face in major cities. Looking back, I realized that I’ve come very far, physically (I moved across the country to attend college) and metaphorically (I’m attending college!), despite all the factors that worked against me. I’m grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way, and I hope to use my professional life to give back to my community so that others have an easier time overcoming the obstacles I faced. While I’m not sure where my career will take me, I hope to explore urban design with focuses on renewable energy, access to public resources, and/or hazard mitigation planning in the face of climate change!
As an RA for Bowdoin College’s Office of Residential Life, I created a safe and welcoming environment in Brunswick Apartments (upperclass housing for approximately 200 students) and Coleman Hall (first-year housing for over 60 students). My responsibilities included attending 2 weekly meetings with other ResLife staff, 5-hour long shifts thrice a semester on weekend nights, the organization of 6 dorm-wide events, and hosting weekly dinners with residents to promote community engagement.
The Harpswell Heritage Land Trust is dedicated to preserving and protecting Harpswell’s natural resources, cultural heritage, and access to the outdoors. They do this through targeted conservation, responsible stewardship, and by providing educational resources to their community. The land trust protects over 20 preserves and trails that are open to the public, including Bowdoin College’s Schiller Coastal Studies Center. Aside from the conservation services provided, the Land Trusts makes an impactful difference in the town of Harpswell with the number of community resources and programs offered. My responsibilities at the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust included managing information on its website & database to make it more accessible to users and reviewing the land trust's energy audit so the office could move towards energy efficiency.
As the Development Intern at Thrive Scholars for the summer of 2022, I facilitated interactions between the organization's development team and potential partner organizations by preparing meeting notes and conducting prospect research using platforms such as iWave and Salesforce.
First-Year Eco-Reps are responsible for providing educational materials and experiences to their peers about the sustainability programs and policies at Bowdoin. This is done through a combination of weekly emails, in-dorm educational campaigns, interactive programs, and the organizing of field trips and events on and off campus. Training and education for Eco-Reps regarding Bowdoin's sustainability efforts and infrastructure consist of two weekly meetings with the Sustainability Program Manager and their assigned team. As an Eco-Rep, I was a part of the Sustainability Office’s Energy Team and served Appleton Hall from October 2021 until May 2022. With the Energy Team, I helped plan campus-wide events like the Energy Competition, Lights-Out Nights, and a Solar Panel (a panel on solar panels) to encourage energy-conserving practices and spread awareness on Bowdoin’s Climate Action Plan.
