Working in the Digital & Mobile department of Aer Lingus, my role as team lead encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities in a busy and challenging environment. Our team develops and maintains the backend services for aerlingus.com, Android & iOS mobile apps, B2B and integration with numerous 3rd parties. I lead a team of developers, tech leads and automation engineers (onshore and offshore). While remaining close to the code and often assist with a bug fix or code review I don't get to spend too much time coding. My focus is the performance and well-being of the team, ensuring they can focus on delivery and so need to be available to help and unblock with whatever issue might arise. Ensuring standards are maintained, reducing technical debt and helping to drive key initiatives in digital transformation space is another important aspect of my role. There is a sizeable portion of the code developed on legacy technologies. The planning and execution to migrate the legacy services to Spring Boot on AWS has been a high priority for me since joining the team.
