My PhD project is focusing on the mechanisms by which the innate immune system pathways induce pro-inflammatory cell signalling. The underlying hypothesis is that complement terminal pathway products (C5a and the Membrane attack complex) are capable of priming / activating the intracellular danger sensing platforms - the NLR inflammasomes. The cell signalling mechanisms underlying this are as yet unresolved, however the synergistic and concomitant activation of these pathways occurs in a range of inflammatory conditions and understanding the interplay between the two may yield valuable therapeutic outcomes in the future.
