During this period I was Master on two container vessels namely the Maersk Arun and the Maersk Boston. Maersk Arun was a 14,063 GT vessel with the capacity of 1068 TEU operating from Gioia Tauro, Italy to Various ports in the Black Sea. Whilst in command I carried out Pilotage duties whilst transiting the Dardanelle Channel and Bosporus Channel. As this was mainly a feeder service into smaller ports a lot of the ship handling experience was gained during this period. Maersk Boston was a 48,853 GT vessel with a capacity of 4,300 TEU operating worldwide. During this command the vessel was chartered to MSC and we underwent a name change and flag change. As the vessel was also being prepared for dry dock I was involved in the preparation of docking specifications as required.
Dec. 2007 - Jan 2009 MAESTRO Management Training Program During this period I was accepted into the Maersk MAESTRO Management training program for sea staff wishing to pursue a career ashore. The training program was structured that the candidate held a number of shore positions that would vary throughout the Maersk Organisation eventually leading onto senior managerial positions. The course was planned over a two year period covering all aspects of the managerial spectrum, Leadership, Human Resources, Finance, Business Strategy & Management, Organisational Development, and Personal Development. Unfortunately after completion of the initial two courses the program was restructured and I took the decision to return to sea. Whilst undertaking the MAESTRO program I held two positions ashore as described below. May 2008 – Jan 2009 Maersk Marine Services Assistant General Manager – Manning – Maersk Marine Services I took this position during a transitional period within the Maersk organization when the group was moving away from individual offices into an integrated Global structure for the all business lines.This position was the Human Resource managerial role responsible for over 1700 sea going staff and over 250 cadets. I lead a team of 7 HR staff who looked after recruitment, general Human Resource issues, cadet administration, visa & logistics of crew placement on board Container, Tanker and Offshore Vessels owned and operated by the Maersk organization. A team of 4 travel coordinators were also linked to my team. Dec 2007 – May 2008 Maersk Marine Services Training Superintendent – Maersk Marine Services, The role of Training Superintendant had a number of objectives but was primarily to review the training needs for all officers in the various ranks against the needs for the different vessel types. The training superintendant also managed the cadet administration, reporting to the Crewing General Manager on all cadet issues.
