Represent members and work on legal matters for a labor union representing more than 130,000 elementary and secondary school teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators, and college students preparing to become teachers throughout Illinois.
Work as Senior Staff Attorney for legal aid non-profit representing low-income individuals and seniors in downstate Illinois. Current areas of practice include expungement and sealing of criminal records, Social Security, unemployment, and other public benefit cases. Also experienced in eviction defense and foreclosure defense. Have served as Co-Chair of Land of Lincoln's Health and Economic Security Task Force focusing on low-wage issues since late 2020. In this capacity, serve as the organization's subject matter expert on issues related to criminal records, unemploymebt benefits, and other employment-related issues. Help organize twice-annual Task Force meetings to keep colleagues informed in this issues. Have presented CLE trainings, spoken to law students, and presented to community groups on these areas of law, and have also been interviewed by television, radio, and print media regarding them.
Worked as attorney for labor union representing approximately 30,000 members in Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Represented union in arbitrations and administrative hearings.
Worked full-time for one of the largest union-side labor and employment law firms in the Pacific Northwest. Researched issues in numerous areas of labor and employment law including ERISA, the NLRA, the ADEA, state wage and hour law, and public sector collective bargaining law. Drafted documents including internal memoranda, briefs for arbitrations and court cases, and position statements submitted to the NLRB and state labor agencies.
Worked on successful Equal Protection challenge to voting procedure in Missouri Community Improvment District. Researched and wrote motion to compel deposition. Researched and wrote response to opponent's hearsay objections. Researched issue of exhaustion of state remedies. Prepared questions for depositions. Edited briefs related to successful preliminary injunction request and motion for summary judgment.
