This was a two-part expedition, starting in Cusuco National Park, Honduras, which is ranked in the top 50 most irreplaceable biodiversity sites in the world and is therefore a major conservation priority. I spent time in both the main base camp, but also more remote forest camps. As well as learning about the ecology of the cloud forests and their conservation importance, I worked alongside a large team of scientists on projects including forest structure and carbon storage capacity, butterfly trapping, amphibian and reptile transect surveys, bird point count and mist net surveys, fungi surveying, large mammal surveys from camera trapping and bat surveys from mist netting and soundscaping. This is the most published team of forest researchers from all the Opwall sites, so it was a great place to learn a range of forest survey techniques and how to analyse these data sets. During this component of my expedition, I also learned how to access and undertake surveys in tree canopies. For the marine component of my expedition I was based based at the Bay Islands College of Diving (BICD) on Utila Island, which was focused on Caribbean coral reef ecology and conservation. I completed the PADI Open Water dive training course, as well as a Caribbean reef ecology and marine survey techniques course with practicals done by diving. This is one of Opwall’s largest marine research sites and is home to their pioneering efforts to integrate technological solutions into the monitoring and study of coral reefs, including 3D computer modelling, use of robots to survey reefs beyond the limits of SCUBA diving, and stereo-video fish surveys to estimate biomass. Overall, this expedition provided me with invaluable opportunities to strengthen my team-building abilities as well as my physical and mental resilience. However, I primarily gained countless memories and strong friendships.
