Research Scientist. Functional & Microbial Genomics for the discovery of Natural Products

Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico

About

I study the evolutionary and mechanistic aspects (at the genome level) that allowed for the appearance of bacterial metabolism, including its genes, enzymes, and metabolites. I am mainly focused on the group of Actinobacteria to explore evolutionary hypotheses experimentally and computationally. As a further step to address these questions, the identification of novel anticancer and antibiotic natural products from cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters in bacteria is very important. I have also dedicated my research to the chemical signals that affect Streptomyces’ natural product production and how we can use organic chemistry, chemical biology, and synthetic biology to accelerate access to cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters.

As Review Editor, I am responsible for evaluating manuscripts, selecting expert reviewers to examine the quality and relevance of submitted manuscripts. I coordinate the review process, facilitate communication between authors and reviewers, and make decisions on the publication, acceptance, rejection or request for modification of manuscripts, always ensuring compliance with ethical standards in scientific research.

    • Science Mentor
      Aug 2018 - Present · 8 yrs

Frontiers for Young Minds believes that the best way to make cutting-edge science discoveries available to younger audiences is to enable young people and scientists to work together to create articles that are both top quality and exciting. Distinguished scientists are invited to write about their discoveries in a language that is accessible for young readers, and it is then up to the kids themselves – with the help of a science mentor – to provide feedback and explain to the authors how to best improve the articles before publication. This unique process produces a collection of freely available scientific articles by leading scientists, shaped for younger audiences by the input of their own young peers. Science Mentors Researchers with experience in science outreach and the peer review process introduce their Young Reviewers to the idea of a life in science, the basics of science publishing, and encourage them to provide the authors with an honest and constructive review.
