  • Sales and Marketing Director at SonTek - a Xylem Brand
    May 1998 - Dec 2011 · 13 yrs 8 mos

I came to SonTek just a few years after formation when it was just a handful of people. In a small company like it was at the time, you have to wear a lot of hats. And though I was in technical sales, daily duties could involve just about anything. It wasn't too much unlike being back on an ocean research ship where getting the job done was paramount - everyone's' success depends on the entire team chipping in where necessary and we always put the customer first. It was a refreshing and rewarding environment to work in and this laid the foundation for my working style. Following its acquisition by YSI Inc. in 2001, I was appointed leader of the sales and marketing functions where I was able to play a major role in driving the company forward as an employee-owner in YSI’s ESOP. Key accomplishments include: • Developed an integrated marketing program focused on communicating and delivering on delivering value. Included a heavy emphasis on customer education and application expertise. • Successful market introductions including the FlowTracker ADV, Argonaut-SL/XR series, and RiverSurveyor • Drove international expansion resulting in greater than 50% of company revenue coming from overseas • Regularly interfaced directly with key customers such as NOAA, USGS, universities, and local organizations interested in water velocity measurement. • Stewarded SonTek through two acquisitions (YSI in 2001 and ITT/Xylem in 2011) • Nurtured the development of digital marketing tools such as SFDC, Act-on and Marketo • Expanded revenues by a factor of 6 during my tenure. • Built and managed a comprehensive sales, marketing and technical support staff

Officers operate ships, fly aircraft, facilitate research projects, conduct diving operations, and serve in staff positions throughout NOAA. By the time of my departure I had served at sea for two years, been trained as a research diver, conducted operations in 7 foreign countries, and served in support of a major program office in Washington, DC. My eight year tenure included the following posts: Executive Officer, NOAA Coastal Ocean Program, Silver Spring, MD (1997-1998) • Worked with leadership to develop strategies supporting COP’s research initiatives. • Prepared Congressional briefings; served as fleet liaison Operations Officer, NOS Field Operations Branch, Seattle, WA (1993-1996) • Developed an advanced hands-on proficiency in a variety of electronic, mechanical, acoustic, and radar based sensors, as well data collection and telemetry platforms for water level and current monitoring stations • Successfully planned and executed field operations in harsh and remote site conditions including coordinated efforts with international agencies in Chile, Mexico, Australia and Singapore.
