As the Director of Marine Operations I am tasked with maintaining the high academic standard set by the University of California, Santa Barbara as well as ensuring the compliance, health, and safety of our marine science support infrastructure. I identify, investigate, and resolve procedural and safety issues as well as conduct field investigations, plant/animal collections, and collaborative research and development projects. • Manage a team of biologists and engineers to provide technical support services to the UCSB research and education community. • Coordinate and oversee a broad spectrum of domestic and international research scientists to maximize project resources and results. • Identify, develop and lead initiatives targeting compliance, risk assessment/avoidance and process improvement. • Develop policy to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal procedural, safety, and environmental laws including: EPA, OSHA, DOT, DFG, RCRA, TSCA, CAA, CWA, CESA and ESA. • Negotiate permitting agreements with state and local regulatory agencies to allow unrestricted development of UCSB programs. • Consult on major construction and renovation projects. • Maintain Collector/Naturalist responsibilities as detailed below.
• Collect marine, freshwater, and terrestrial flora and fauna for use in classrooms, research laboratories, and partnering institutions. • Oversee biological and physical oceanographic operations including deployment, recovery, and maintenance of oceanographic equipment. • Delegate and manage research space and storage areas. Maintain department aquaria, SCUBA compressor, SCUBA cylinders, and multi-million dollar seawater infrastructure. • Keep detailed records of species distribution and abundance to report to the California Department of Fish and Game. • Develop and maintain policy for campus boating program. Extensive experience in the operation of small boats (<30ft) in severe weather conditions. • Maintain a working knowledge of marine engines and small boat maintenance. • Lead contact, advisor, and coordinator for marine laboratory matters including research projects, course field trips, expansion projects, and safety inspections.
