I lead the department’s research in Structural Earthquake Engineering at Imperial College London and direct the Emerging Structural Technologies Group. Most of my current work asks whether the dynamic behaviour of structures under extreme loading — rocking, dissipating energy, attenuating seismic waves — can be expressed in forms compact enough to design from first principles rather than merely describe their response. I trained as a civil engineer in Peru and worked on large and small hydraulic infrastructure projects in the Andes and earthquake damage assessment after the 2001 Great Ica Earthquake before coming to Europe for postgraduate training.
Expert opinion for different clients including: Advanta Global on behalf of Swiss Re on the causes of damage and collapse of two high profile structures in LatAm, the Peruvian College of Engineers (Peru). Expert advice on the structural safety of seismically damaged structures after the 2001 Great Ica Earthquake on behalf of the Peruvian College of Engineers.
PRONAMACHS: A Special Program from the Peruvian Government with IB and Japan Banks funds. Agencia General Sánchez Cerro (Peru). Supervision of the construction works of a number of hydraulic projects and formulation of sustainable development strategies for Andean micro-basins.
Construction management of a number of irrigation projects and several small-scale community development infrastructure works for Andean communities (2500 - 3500 meters above sea level).
