About

Christian Baumgartner, PhD, is a Professor and Head of the Institute of Health Care Engineering with European Testing Center of Medical Devices (IHCE) at Graz University of Technology, Austria. He earned his MSc (1994) and PhD (1998) from Graz University of Technology, and received his habilitation degree in Biomedical Engineering from UMIT Tirol, Austria (2006). Additionally, he holds a Diploma in organ and conducting (1998) from the Conservatory of Graz, Austria. From 1998 to 2002, Dr. Baumgartner worked as an R&D systems engineer at Tecan.com. From 2007 to 2008, he was a research fellow at the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis, Northeastern University, and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. In 2009, he was appointed Full Professor and Director of the Institute of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at UMIT Tirol. Since 2015, he has served as the Head of the Institute of Health Care Engineering with the European Testing Center of Medical Devices at Graz University of Technology, Austria. Dr. Baumgartner has authored more than 200 publications in refereed journals, books, and conference proceedings, as well as patents. He is also a reviewer for over 50 scientific journals. He served as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Clinical Bioinformatics, is an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Physiology: Computational Physiology and Medicine, Section Editor of Sensors (Biomedical Sensors section), Co-Section Editor of the IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics (Biosignal and Imaging Informatics), and a member of the editorial boards of Cell Biology and Toxicology and Methods of Information in Medicine. He has taught more than 20 courses spanning physics, biology, electrical engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering, and medical device regulation. His primary research interests include biomedical sensors & signals, electrophysiology and bioelectricity (cardiac, cancer), biomedical modeling and simulation, computational biology, and medical device development, safety, and regulatory affairs. The European Testing Center of Medical Devices (PMG) at the Institute of Health Care Engineering is a state-accredited body for inspecting and certifying medical devices according to European standards and regulations. Leveraging its expertise in conformity assessments as a former Notified Body and the engineering proficiency, IHCE/PMG provides scientists and manufacturers with a comprehensive range of engineering, testing, and certification services spanning the entire product life cycle, as well as quality system certification.
