About

I am a 3rd year Mining Engineering student at the University of British Columbia with experience working at Highland Valley Copper Mine as well as extensive software development and research experience. My primary interest is the integration of custom built software, automation, artificial intelligence, and other industry 5.0 principles into mining operations in order to substantially increase productivity and efficiency. I believe that now more than ever, the mining industry has ought to relentlessly pursue continuous improvement and actively challenge the status quo of how things are done. This is necessary in order to integrate innovative technologies and keep up with the increasing global mineral resource demand to transition the world to a greener economy. In addition to my mining engineering education, I am also a published academic researcher and experienced Python developer. My endeavours in software development and academic research resulted in me first authoring a paper which was published to the Journal of Environmental Modelling & Software. The paper documents the development and implementation of a SCADA and data analysis program that I built, which serves as the backbone for a large research project being done by UBC's iREACH lab.

Experience

  • Undergraduate Researcher & Python Developer - iREACH Lab at The University of British Columbia
    Sep 2021 - Nov 2024 · 3 yrs 3 mos

    • Coded an air quality monitoring SCADA in Python, enabling iREACH to conduct their research without needing to spend $70K over the next ten years on comparable software • First-authored a research paper published to the Journal of Environmental Modelling & Software describing the development and implementation of the SCADA software I built • Integrated measurement instruments into a datalogger network via a Modbus-TCP connection, saving iREACH from paying over $3K to the datalogger manufacturer to assist *position began as a full time 4 month co-op and then transitioned into the current part time arrangement

  • Mining Engineer Co-op at Teck Resources Limited
    Sep 2023 - Apr 2024 · 8 mos

    • Successfully managed grade control for the entire mine, delineating each blast between ore and waste based on assays taken by the lab • Built various Python tools for automating the creation of several critical reports • Established best practices for the ongoing creation, maintenance, and distribution of future internally built software applications

  • Research Assistant at National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada
    Jan 2022 - May 2022 · 5 mos

    • Conducted LNG spill experiments on low heat input welds and analyzed the resulting thermal stresses to aid Canada’s shipbuilding industry in designing safer LNG tankers • Created a computer simulation of the residual thermal stressed induced from low heat input welds to inform Canadian shipbuilders how catastrophic failure caused by an LNG spill would most likely occur
