  • Gap year at Career Break
    Jan 2024 - Dec 2024 · 1 yr

As 2024 marked a decade since I graduated university, and with 30 consecutive years of being in full-time education or employment, I chose to make it my “belated gap year”. The primary purpose of the year off was to be with family, whom I had experienced an unexpectedly long separation from over the course of the pandemic, I enjoyed an extended visit and spent several months in British Columbia. Without the time demands of work, I was free to invest extra time in my hobbies, engaging in my favourite outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, and snowboarding, and work on practical projects like planning and building my perfect mountain bike and finishing our self-build campervan. I pursued further learning, elevating my German language skills to B1 level and upskilling through enrolment in the self-paced Python Institute course Python Essentials. The change of pace allowed room for reflection, and it became a “so what next?” moment. When my partner was offered an opportunity in Bamberg, mid-way through my “gap year”, Germany felt like a great move for us. My break meant that I was able to manage our relocation from the UK to Germany and take up opportunities for advanced German classes at the University of Bamberg when we arrived. Not working was a novel experience for me, having been continuously in employment throughout my adult life. The year was rewarding in many ways, but I have really missed my work. The time off only confirmed my enduring passion for mechanical engineering and my enthusiasm for finite element analysis, although I do feel ready to spread my wings into a new sector or industry.
