Art Therapy Advisor for Heartland Literature, a reading mentorship programme. Heartland Literature is a charitable organisation dedicated to addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences through shared, sensory reading. Heartland Literature’s reading program is a deeply impactful initiative that recognises the power of storytelling, literature, and creative engagement in supporting children who have experienced adversity. This program creates a safe and nurturing space where books become more than just stories—they become tools for healing, connection, and self-discovery. The integration of literature with art and sensory engagement is particularly powerful. By pairing children with dedicated reading mentors, the program also strengthens relational trust, cultivating a sense of stability and belonging whilst experiencing the joy of shared human connection through the arts. The thoughtful, trauma-informed design of Heartland Literature’s program makes it a vital and innovative contribution to the landscape of foster care support and beyond. We are currently running a pilot program supported by Boys’ Town Fostering Services and Temasek Foundation. This initiative pairs reading mentors with children from foster and residential care, providing them with meaningful and supportive learning opportunities.
