Charlie is a partner in the Atlanta office of Smith, Currie & Hancock LLP, a national law firm focused on the representation of the construction industry and related entities. Charlie’s legal representation covers all phases of construction planning, development, design, construction and facility operations and management. His experience in these contexts includes the resolution of project-specific disputes, as well as management and oversight of post-project operations, risk management and claim handling. He has helped clients resolve a wide range of issues through traditional litigation, claim preparation and defense, contract drafting and negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution, in each instance with a focus on the identification, evaluation and management of risks. Charlie has advised clients on construction related matters for numerous building types, including high-rise office and residential towers, hotels, schools, recreational and athletic centers, auditoriums, retail developments, medical facilities, industrial plants and science labs. Charlie endeavors to provide clients with the most cost-efficient and effective solutions to their problems, avoiding costly litigation if possible. Because this is not always possible, he has litigated claims in all levels of municipal and state courts and within the Federal Court system, including within the U.S. District Courts of Georgia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., the Fourth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal and the United States Supreme Court. Charlie also provides consultation to facility owners related to government contract compliance, including issues raised by application of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) to construction contracts and other related documents, the resolution of construction-phase issues, the interpretation of contractual responsibilities and obligations and the development of appropriate compliance programs, risk management procedures and safeguards.
