Dr. Carla Abreu-Ellis, Associate Professor of Inclusive Services & Exceptional Learners, holds a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Abreu-Ellis teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University. Her research interests include College students with disabilities, technology and disabilities, access to education and retention of college students, Universal Design, and diversity. She has authored or co-authored articles in the following journals: Journal of Developmental Education, Brock Education Journal, Journal of College Orientation and Transition, and Journal of Teaching and Learning. She co-authored a book chapter, The digital divide in disability and education. In C. Vrasidas, M. Zembylas, & G. V. Glass (Eds.), ICT for Education, Development, and Social Justice. Greenwich, CT: Information Age Publishing, Inc. Her research interests have taken her to Portugal, Canada, and Brazil. Dr. Abreu-Ellis is a proud member of the NAMI Richland County Board.

• Worked with the student population and the university community to ensure equitable access to classroom activities, course requirements, programs, services, and facilities • Maintained a caseload of 200 students with chronic medical conditions, psychiatric disabilities, learning disabilities, and mobility impairments • Provided information, resources, and support to faculty and other teaching staff in order to increase their awareness of the difficulties faced by students with disabilities in higher education • Participated in the development, implementation, and dissemination of policies, and procedures for students with disabilities • Provided information and assistance regarding access to university, accommodations, support, and services to secondary school guidance personnel, learning support staff • Engaged in outreach to the community and government agencies dealing with individuals with disabilities, parents, and students who were seeking admission to the university
• Founded a new student group– National Alliance for the Mentally Ill – BGSU serving to support individuals with psychiatric disabilities studying at Bowling Green State University • Engaged in leadership activities to market the organization and recruit students from campus community
• Assisted in the transition process in relation to curriculum and learning outcomes in the General Education program. The institution moved away from a distribution model to the assessment of intellectual skills • Worked collaboratively with the Director of the program and the Advisory Committee in order to ensure changes proposed by the White Paper were implemented • Coordinated the distribution of course evaluation materials • Assisted in the dissemination of materials through development of the General Education web-site
• Responsible for the initial process of self and career exploration • Guided the clients through the assessment and provided career exploration resources • Organized and delivered a series of career related workshops throughout the academic year such as Career exploration and Job search strategies • Collaborated with other counselors, learning strategists, and assistive technologists to provide services for students with learning disabilities • Developed informative print material for students and faculty about a variety of learning disabilities • Trained tutors to utilize strategies when dealing with students with learning disabilities • Developed a transition program for high school students who were planning on attending St. Clair College after high school graduation • Developed a promotional video, showing the function of student services which was presented to students during the orientation seminar
• Co-authored the regional web-site for the HOSTS mentored reading project through the Center for Evaluation Services and the State of Ohio • Data-based electronically submitted data for analysis • Helped perform various learning assessment tests on elementary children in northwest Ohio
