In over 40 years ive exhibited in diverse places & countries worldwide. Ive shown alongside a wide array of artists, from contemporary, counterculture, folk, outsider, visionary, occult, esoteric, taught and untaught. I believe in a democratic curation in the arts, which seems that only now is happening more. I left the Royal College of Art in 1988 where i had studied Ceramics & Glass. When i left i reinvented myself from sculpture to painter. 1989 at The Banff Centre Canada i met American artist Eric Wright. He lived in NY & i began living and collaborating with him from that time. Over three decades we created installations exhibiting in: PS1 MoMA NY; The Horse Hospital London; JMKAC Wisconsin; Aspex Portsmouth; Mercer Union Toronto, Space Gallery Los Angeles & Showroom MaMa Rotterdam. I only exhibit solo now & do not collaborate. My work has always gravitated towards esoterica even when this was at odds with what was being exhibited. Maybe because im born on the Autumn Equinox. My drawings have been shown at The Drawing Centre NY; The New Art Gallery Walsall; The Jerwood; The Outsider Artfair Paris with Galerie Toxic Luxembourg; The Outsider Artfair NY & Art Basel Miami with The Good Luck Gallery LA; in several solos with The Horse Hospital, in the permanent collection of The College of Psychic Studies London. I write about artists that interest me.. usually creators outside the mainstream. Articles have been published in: Raw Vision Magazine; Artesian Gras Roots & upwelling arts Magazine; im a regular writer for Brutjournal; ‘Myinnerest on Madge Gill published by Rough Trade Strange Attractor Press SAP one & two; The Body Politic Magazine; This Is Not A Gateway journals 1&2. Im open for gallery shows & representation. A monograph LIBERTY REALM was published by Strange Attractor Press 2020
ROGER BURTON(1949–2025) Roger Burton fought tirelessly to preserve the London building that became his life’s work, keeping it alive as an arts venue and clothing archive, and protecting its unique historic character. Known as The Horse Hospital, it is just one part of his inspirational legacy as a supporter of the arts. A former Mod, Burton sourced the original 1960s clothing for the 1978 cult film Quadrophenia, going on to style some of the world’s most iconic rock stars and bands. He saw creative potential in the discarded, collecting surplus clothing and forgotten objects others deemed worthless. He founded The Contemporary Wardrobe Collection which grew to include over 20,000 items from five decades of youth culture. He mentored countless young stylists, helping define the visual landscape of British fashion, music and cinema. His 2017 book Rebel Threads documented decades of youth culture and street style. A true maverick and self-taught creative, Burton attracted a circle of like-minded individuals, including late artist Ian White, with whom he curated groundbreaking exhibitions of artists rarely seen in London. Among Burton’s most celebrated achievements was the 1993 exhibition “Vive Le Punk” and exclusive documentary film of the same name which brought together Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren in conversation about their collaboration. In the early 1990s, Burton found an empty, smoke-blackened Georgian building in a cobbled street Bloomsbury, central London. Once a hospital for injured cab horses, it became his life’s work as, over the next three decades, he transformed it into a vast clothing archive and an avant-garde arts venue, often having to fight to keep it open. Burton rejected corporate influence, mainstream trends and the art establishment, and in The Horse Hospital he created a space where authentic creativity could thrive, a home for creators who did not fit in anywhere else.
