Uses a diverse range of analytical methods for the investigation of test substances in test systems; Performs laboratory tasks including, but not limited to, use analytical balances, measuring volumes (with the use of devices such as syringes, pipets and graduated cylinders), preparation of buffer solutions, use of analytical probes (pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity), sample processing and homogenization, microbial analysis, total organic carbon measurement, wet and dry ratio determination, sample combustions, use of liquid scintillation counters, arrangement of experimental setup such as preparation of traps for volatile components; Performs sample extractions, concentration of soluble fractions, partitioning and clean-up of sample extracts, calibrant and reference standard preparation, chromatographic analysis using various analytical techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with laboratory instrument software programs; Performs data entry, calculations in spreadsheets, maintenance and organization of raw data binders, and preparation of data summaries, draft reports, and response to quality assurance (QA) audits; Documentation of work performed in laboratory notebooks, worksheets, instrument logbooks, or other printed documents as per applicable standard operations procedures (SOP) and good laboratory practice (GLP) guidelines, and contributes to the revision of SOP’s and in writing of initial draft of new SOP’s; As a study director, responsible for monitoring GLP compliance of work performed on assigned projects, and for presentation of project updates to study sponsors.
Taught courses in chemical and environmental engineering in the graduate and undergraduate levels; Acted as adviser and review panel member to graduate and undergraduate thesis students.
Projects: “Demonstration of best available techniques and best environmental practices (BAT/BEP) in fossil fuel-fired utility and industrial boilers in response to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)” and “Implementation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) Management Programs for Electric Cooperatives and Safe E-wastes Management in the Philippines” Responsible for the effective implementation of projects and ensured adherence to the work plan including monitoring, evaluation, and dissemination of results; Led the national implementation of a regional project on boilers involving 6 countries (Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines, and Thailand) with a grant budget of USD 4M from a funding agency; Led the proposal writing and implementation of a project on electronic waste management and awarded a grant budget of USD 6.2M by the funding agency with a co-financing of USD 36M from project partners; As outcomes of these projects, private industrial facility partners reduced their environmental impact and conformed to national and international standards.
Project: “Conduct of National Inventory of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Contaminated Sites and Development of National Strategy for the Management of POPs Contaminated Sites” Developed of guidelines and methodology for the conduct of the national inventory, specifically in the drafting of site assessment, site screening guidelines, and stakeholder management; Reviewed hazard ranking of sites and methods for management of contaminated sites; Provided advice on the development of the country's national strategy, long-term monitoring, and remedial action to be taken for contaminated sites.
Developed analytical methods for the analysis of field and reactor samples, and evaluated process methodologies for the research projects; Conducted training on specific analytical methods applied in the research projects, and attended trainings conducted by other national research institutes within and outside the ARRPET network.
