Carl W. Ernst is a specialist in Islamic studies, with a focus on West and South Asia. His published research (including eight books, 3 edited volumes, and dozens of scholarly articles), based on the study of Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, has been mainly devoted to the study of Islam and Sufism. His publications include a translation of Hallaj: Poems of a Sufi Martyr (2028); two volumes of essays entitled It’s not just Academic and Refractions of Islam in India; Islamophobia in America :The Anatomy of intolerance (Palgrave 2013) and How to Read the Qur'an: A New Guide, with Select Translations (UNC Press, 2011, http://uncpress.unc.edu/books/T-7953.html). He has taught large numbers of undergraduate students, advised PhD students in Islamic studies, and administered programs in international studies focusing on the Middle East and South Asia.
