Having completed a Masters Degree in Computer Studies and a Bsc in Construction Engineering in 1999, I set out with the intention of paying a few debts and found some temporary work landscaping a garden for a private client in Milngavie, Glasgow… I knew all along that working in an office with the office politics and hierarchical management system wouldn't suit who I was and fortunately I had been around construction and used hand tools. The progression into landscaping wasn't too hard and opened up many different fields from planting to fencing, deck building to complete garden design and very quickly moved into using stone. As much by chance as by design I found myself using stone on a lot of my projects. Cobble stone edgings to lawns, driveway and paths, yorkstone, and caithness flag stone patios, and or course dry stone walls.. It seems that the further i go in my career, the further I look back for inspiration. Lime mortar also has a huge heritage and is slowly enjoying a revival whereby houses built with lime are getting on a bit and are in need of some sympathetic restoration. Dry stone work to me was like a black art at the beginning. I was very curious about it but was not really sure how it worked. I started building with stone and mortar and slowly began to hide the mortar, to make it look dry. I knew this was cheating though. The wall looked the part but I knew that they weren't dry stone... I then took a one day course with Irwin Cambell, a Master Craftsman Dry stone waller. I asked a lot of questions and picked up some useful tips and then started back on the books, looking at pictures and reading about the building of drystone walls.. The history of dry stone work is so rich from scars brae approximately 5000 years old to modern classic works from the likes of Richard Clegg, it is a massive subject.
