    In early 1996, I started investing in Database Marketing (and related) production assets. My "bricks & mortar" company -- Data Based Direct, Inc. -- grew and evolved over a 7-year period: 1st: We started as a small consulting, data processing & direct mail print shop specialized in complex data driven digital imaging -- at our small offices in Berkley, MI; 2nd: We added a 5-seat call center, tripled our laser capacity & added high speed ink jet mailing services -- in our Warren, MI offices; 3rd: We moved into a brand new 7,800 sq. ft. facility in Clinton Twp. -- where we doubled the call center, added more direct mail machinery -- and added a rack of servers for hosting custom built web, database & email services for our clients. . . . all thanks to sharp young guy I hired out of Wayne State, named Dan Forkin. We served a B2B client base including Sterling Commerce (Columbus, OH), Interliant (Vienna, VA), Crains Communication (Detroit, MI) -- along with several regional direct marketing agencies. In August of 2002, my primary client Interliant filed for bankruptcy -- forcing me to close my doors and go back to consulting. Lesson learned: no more bricks and mortar -- look to the clouds!
