As an Automation Engineer in SEL’s Engineering Services division, I actively participate in small project teams that design, implement, test, commission, and document large scale control system projects. These projects are for industrial and utility customers in high, medium, and low voltage applications. These have included: a SCADA/automation/HMI project for a steel mill, a remedial action (anti-blackout) scheme for an entire country’s transmission grid, and low voltage motor controls for a very large petrochem project. I regularly utilize many protection, automation, and communications hardware devices across SEL’s product line, including: • Protective relays: Many models, including the SEL-451, 751, and 849 • Real-Time Automation Controllers: SEL-3530 • Linux-based computers: SEL-1102 • Managed Ethernet switches: SEL-2730M • Security gateways: SEL-3620 I write most controller code in the IEC 61131 environment and use a wide variety of SEL’s project development software packages, including those for IEC 61131 programming, protective relay configuration, HMI development, and IEC 61850 communications. I work closely with customers from project definition through commissioning, documentation, and training phases. About SEL: SEL makes electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. To accomplish this mission, we design, manufacture, and support a complete line of products and services for the protection, monitoring, control, automation, and metering of electric power systems. Our solutions range from comprehensive generator and transmission protection to distribution automation and control systems
