What I did: Consolidated an array of Operational reports under one department, eliminating redundancy, improving efficiency and delivery to end users for Automotive Re-marketing Group. What I Learned: Banking, Auto-Remarketing, some Python, R, PowerShell, Power BI, MS SQL, along with regulations and security in the banking / Financial services industries. Who Influenced Me: Emily Kim Cool Stuff: Seeing auto auctions in action. Seeing the huge contrast between the meaning of "Risk" in the banking industry compared to the Manufacturing sector.
What I Did: I help people make better decisions. Working closely with people across the organization, I help solve important business issues by using Statistics, Data Mining, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and the Scientific method. I share the important results with senior leaders and managers and aid in the analysis, interpretation and understanding of those results. What I Learned: SAS Analytics, Natural Language Processing (NLP) Advanced Forecasting, Fraud Detection, Visual Analytics, Sharepoint, OBIEE Dashboards and Reports, and Google Analytics. Who Influenced Me: We live in a world where those who apply themselves are now the experts. I now find inspiration from Richard Branson, Sergey Brin & Larry Page in the areas of Leadership and Corporate Culture. Bill and Melinda Gates in Humanitarian issues and true power of money. Alanah Pearce (AKA Charalanahzard), and th3j35t3r in technology, Alec Ross, Jared Cohen, Fareed Zakaria, Marcia Greenberger and Ms Maggie Mayhem in politics, woman and human rights. Cool Stuff: Analytics projects, in and outside the work place, are expanding my knowledge in the areas of NLP, Machine learning, Event detection. What I Did: Helped people make better decisions. Providing customer analytics support to the greater organization from within the Quality Systems IT group. Internal customers include the Customer Quality team, Product Failure Review Board teams, Customer account teams, Senior Managers, Engineering Design Teams and other as needed requests for assistance. What I Learned: How to change the world and what it takes to do that. To a lesser extent...SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Enterprise Miner, Data Mining Methods using the SEMMA Model, collaboration on Google Applications. Who Influenced Me: Gordon S. Linoff of Data Miners Inc. I took a week long Data Mining class with this man and learned an incredible amount in a very short time. Jared Cohen of Google Ideas and came to a better understanding of how companies and the world can influence each other. Cool Stuff: Getting exposure to Googles reality and seeing the impact that Corporate culture has on an organization. I witnessed culture transformation from Motorola to Motorola Mobility to Google and then to ARRIS. Each of the changes was dramatic and profound in terms of the impact that it had on employees and their performance.
What I Did: Provide customer Quality support for AT&T, Time Warner, Cox, Telmex, Charter Communications, Cincinnati Bell Telephone and the greater Latin America Region. Lead cross functional Lean and Six Sigma Project teams to drive business process improvement across the organization. Lead tiger teams to resolve customer problems including hardware, software, network issues, DDoS and device pirate attacks. Provide Quality support to customer facing service organizations including Technical support, Field Engineering, services engineering and Inside Account Management. Support the greater business organization with metrics reporting, data mining, strategic planning and strategy. What I Learned: How Six Sigma was really supposed to work, the R statistics language and packages, RATTLE, Google Refine, what a “Learning” organization looks like, how a corporate culture really makes a difference in results, how to put rigor into my mathematical thinking. Who Influenced Me: Phil Mercy, Thomas Goodwin, Jeff Summers & Michael Givot, all very serious, hard core technologists in Six Sigma who challenged me, taught me and helped me learn. Sergey Brin who provided outstanding and powerful insights on success, ideas, creativity, persistence and the value of having a tolerance for “mistakes”. Cool Stuff: Learning the “Rocket Science” from so many smart people. Watching how Googles Management created innovation and allowed employees to be passionate about what they were working on. What I Learned: What a company that ruthlessly pursues excellence looks like and acts like. The value of having lots of really smart people in your organization. How to manage large improvement projects that most other companies would break into pieces. Who Influenced Me: Dr. Theresa Simpson who was both my boss and mentor in Six Sigma, and under whose guidance I took two teams to the worlds best project competition. I credit Theresa with helping me to find the zen of Six Sigma at the intuitive level. Cool Stuff: Being allowed to directly work with customers for so long, and on so many issues that it became normal. "Fear of making a mistake" was replaced with "opportunity to do something great together."
What I Did: Managed production facility with 3 product groups: Helicopter rotor bearings, commercial ball bearings, Spherical Plain Bearings for industrial applications. What I Learned: AS9100, Super tight tolerances and precision, a lot about center-less grinding, metalworking and metallurgy, why union membership is shrinking in this country, why you never work alone in a factory and that not everyone plays straight with you. Who Influenced Me: A minor league baseball player who passed on a chance to play major league for personal family reasons, and a former world arm wrestling champion humble enough to thank people for saving his life. Cool Stuff: Seeing first hand that different people want different things out of life. Those who get opportunities don't always want them, those who are successful don't always value it, and those who say they are truthful aren't always truthful.
