Senior HR leader for the NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Led the ICB NHS staff survey, analysing and reporting trends, presenting findings to the Executive Committee, and developing solutions to enhance engagement and employee experience. Reviewed, developed, and implemented a competitive benefits package. Acted as Senior Responsible Officer for Menopause employer-friendly accreditation. Strategically led health and wellbeing initiatives for both the ICB and ICS. Provided expert consultancy on pay and reward to improve attraction and retention. Key Achievements: • Introduced an informative pay gap report and action plan, ensuring executives are updated on progress. • Led the creation and implementation of a health and wellbeing hub, supporting the health and adult social care sector workforce across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. • Developed and implemented a strategic pay and reward approach, introducing staff recognition, and adopting a flexible approach to pay to boost attraction and retention. • Established a strategic approach to health and wellbeing for the ICB, including a targeted action plan and comprehensive mental health support package based on sickness absence data.
Lead senior reward expert for Defra group, overseeing approximately 10,000 employees. Directed the development and implementation of reward strategies for Defra, Natural England (NE), and the Environment Agency (EA). Provided expert reward services through leading a professional team of 13 to Defra’s Arm’s Length Bodies and Agencies, fostering strong working relationships with senior leaders and managers. Led a complex pay reform programme, harmonising terms and conditions, transforming ways of working, and introducing capability-based pay for professionals. Presented pay proposals to the Remuneration Committee, negotiated and communicated pay awards for Defra group (25,000+ people). Contributed reward expertise to wider HR projects, including HR transformation, people performance, HR IT system replacement, and places for growth. Key Achievements: • Developed complex pay flexibility cases for Defra and NE, endorsed by senior leadership through extensive stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and evidence-based proposals. • Fostered strong working relationships by leading a team that delivered high-quality expert services to multiple Arm’s Length Bodies, resulting in increased customer satisfaction and trust. • Implemented a new digital pay framework, significantly improving attraction and retention. • Created innovative reward solutions as part of a task and finish group addressing cost of living pressures within a 5-month period.
I led the implementation of the strategic approach for pay and reward in the Cabinet Office. Responsible for pay awards for senior civil servants and all other grades, including leading on negotiations with the unions. I undertook a comprehensive review of allowances and the benefits package and implemented improvements following extensive engagement and collaboration. I provided policy advice to levels of stakeholders. I also led on job evaluation and am developing a light touch approach to meet user needs. Key achievements: Successfully delivered a major grade restructuring programe. Delivered a 2-year pay case which provided improved pay uplifts. Implemented a pay solution for digital professionals.
I was the team leader for the pay and reward team. We were responsible for the pay of 40,000 MOD civilian staff including specialists, generalists, NHS grades, fire fighters and teachers. My remit included pensions, leading on pay negotiations, expenses, allowances, giving expert advice at employment tribunals and setting the direction for pay and recognition schemes. I also introduced new performance management systems for teachers, nurses and firefighters. Achievements included successfully delivering a simplified and more affordable allowance package, giving evidence at an ET which the Department won and linking pay progression to performance for teachers, nurses and fire fighters.
I was responsible for setting the pay strategy and leading on the annual pay awards for grades below the senior civil service including nurses, teachers and fire fighters. I also initiated a comprehensive allowance review and developed a new package which was more affordable, simple and met business needs. I completed this as I moved into the team leader role.
