Linking stories to the landscape fosters a sense of connection with the surrounding area and increases pride in one's region. These stories are also attractive to visitors from outside the region. In 2026-2027, four initiatives will be developed in Borger-Odoorn as part of "Experiences of the Peat Colonies," bringing the rich heritage and unique identity of the peat colony landscape to life for residents and visitors in a contemporary way. As project leader, I am managing the initiatives "Story of the Monden" and "Waterrijk Valthermond 2.0," commissioned by the municipality of Borger-Odoorn. • Writer 'Het booënboek. Vetweiderij in de Schoonebeeker marke'
      Jan 2020 - Nov 2021 · 1 yr 11 mos

Already before 1500 there must have been dozens of booën in the Schoonebeeker marke, the collective wild lands of the farmers from Oud-Schoonebeek. It was a unique form of fattening cattle grazing, which occurred exclusively in Schoonebeek. The booarea consisted of cattle shed, hay barn, stocking meadow 'de belt', hayfield 'maogien' and the surrounding 'heuving'. The boo was inhabited for much of the year by the 'booheer', in fact a herdsman. The boo cattle, mainly consisting of young steers, were bred by the Schoonebeekers themselves or were bought up to be fattened on the boo into slaughter oxen. From May to October, the oxen grazed the greenlands around the boo. In the autumn and winter the oxen were grazed by the booheer on the bogs and stored in the boo at night. Between Christmas and Candlemas, the booheer returned to the Schoonebeek farm. Once fat, the animals were sold and driven to the IJsselsteden.
