For my first experience in paid employment, I was a factory floor worker at Simon Howie Foods factory just south of my home village. Rising early to get into work there were varying tasks which I would work on throughout the day. From handling produce on operation lines in a group of 4+ , and being trusted by factory operations director to moving and organising packaged goods for collection and delivery. In the latter stages of this employment, I worked closely with the “boning hall manager” whom managed the delivery of ‘mass meats’ which I would learn invaluable carving skills and preparing the high quality product to hit the shop shelves. This role was a true eye opening experience from a young age, understanding the ins and outs of the butchery industry and working in high intensity teams has shaped me all these years on to how I think of large operations and how I play my part in team exercises.
On a 5 day internship at UCL, in a group of 6, we were tasked in designing an outdoor space for a proposed extension to the British library. We used the RIBA design steps and communicated ideas off one another to come up with a great design that we as a group are very proud of.
Work experience with bell Ingram was very good in the sense I learned a lot by working with a qualified architect. He taught me loads to do with the design of houses and best way to lay them out. During the short 5 day work experience, I got to work on an actual project that I got to re design. I also got to go on a site visit of a housing estate to a plot where there are buildings getting torn down and how they are incorporating the new houses into the old buildings. I got to sit in a board meeting getting pitched ideas from different companies. The last two days I was focussed on a new project which is private meaning I cannot say anything about! All in all the work experience was well worth it as it taught me loads of very worth while remembering knowledge on how to become one of the best architects.
