Hartley Wintney, England, United Kingdom
27 years’ sell-side experience in Equity Research - 12 years as an Equity Analyst and 15 years as Head of Equity Research Content for EMEA - divided by a 2-year spell as a Portfolio Manager for a Pan-Euro market-neutral Equity fund. My work in Research Management has exposed me to over 800 listed companies across all industries in EMEA, including over 200 IPOs. This has given me a rare analyst and investor perspective on how capital markets assess and value diverse industries, business models and firms at all stages of their development.
Equity Content Expert, providing Investor and Market Perspectives across multiple industries, ESG and IPOs
Head of EMEA Research Product (strategy and content) and Chair of the EMEA Stock Selection Committee, which provided Regulatory oversight to ensure the integrity and independence of the Research views (approx.650 companies across all industries). I worked closely with our highly-ranked team of equity analysts, domain-experts and strategists, reviewing ~300 major published reports per annum, building and challenging the integrity of Investment Cases and identifying inconsistencies and biases; connecting Business Strategies to Financial Statements; driving thematic conversations across industries; bringing broader perspectives to Valuation frameworks; incorporating ESG into equity stories (since 2014). I oversaw the positioning and valuation content of >200 pre-IPO research reports, and coordinated numerous multi-regional and multi-industry thematic reports. A senior member of the management team, I interviewed and helped train every analyst hired into the division. Through this role, I learned to assess the critical value drivers of a business model and connect them to the key investment debates surrounding a stock; to explore what the market is pricing in and missing; and distil these into a clear equity story for non-specialist investors. Peer review was an essential part of my process. I learned to challenge received wisdom and confirmation bias; use scenarios to drive thinking away from single-point estimates; test the plausible boundaries of risk and reward.
I was a member of the firm's EMEA Mental Health Advisory Board, which helps to shape and deliver the region's Mental Health strategy, including raising awareness, reducing stigma and promoting help and resources.
Zadig Asset Management gave me 2 years’ experience helping to start and manage a fund (€1bn gross), for which I was responsible for coverage of over 100 companies in the UK (excl. Financials and Resources) and pan-European Consumer & Business Services.
