Bart Noordam (1964) obtained his PhD degree in Physics (cum laude) at the University of Amsterdam. After a brief stay as Postdoc in the US he started in 1992 a research group at the FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied the ultra-fast interactions between light and atoms. Bart Noordam supervised 10 PhD students and published over 120 scientific papers. He interrupted his academic career for two years to work as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, and returned to AMOLF (200 employees) fall 2002 as director. In 2005 Bart Noordam was elected as the first director of the Randstedelijke Rekenkamer. He founded this regional audit organization reviewing the € 2 billion budget of the provinces Flevoland, Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Zuid-Holland. Bart Noordam joined ASML, provider of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry, February 2008 as Department Manager of the Imaging Department. In April 2009 Bart was appointed as Dean, Faculty of Science, at the University of Amsterdam. He was responsible for research and teaching in all natural science disciplines at the University. In November 2012 Bart returned to ASML as Vice President Research and transferred in July 2015 to Development & Engineering responsible for System Integration and Performance. Since February 2020 Bart is head of the sector Strategy and Presidents' Office. The sector includes: Corporate Strategy; Strategic Business Development; Presidents’ Office; Corporate Marketing; Field Marketing; Government and External Affairs. As Faculty of Science professor at the University of Amsterdam he worked on laser-matter interaction, he resigned from that position March 2016. Bart Noordam is co-author of a book and a series of columns in Science, both entitled Mastering your PhD, guiding PhD students through their doctoral years.
