About

Most entrepreneurship advice is either too theoretical to use or too shallow to trust. Academic research stays locked in journals. Business gurus skip the evidence. Founders end up navigating one of the hardest things they'll ever do with a map drawn by someone who's never actually been there. That's the gap I've spent 30 years trying to close. I'm Terrence Brown — Professor of Technology-based Entrepreneurship at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, founding editor of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing, and the voice behind Ask Dr. Brown. My work sits at the intersection of rigorous research and real-world application. Two PhDs (Rutgers & Luleå), two MBAs one from Wharton and a second from Rutgers, and decades of working directly with founders, engineers, and innovation-driven organizations across four continents. I've supervised hundreds of ventures from idea to market, led programs at KTH, MIT, and beyond, and watched up close what separates the businesses that scale from the ones that stall. What I've learned is this: most founders don't fail because they lack hustle. They fail because they're working from the wrong mental model of how growth actually works. Here's what I focus on: → Entrepreneurial marketing — acquiring resources and customers without a big budget → Opportunity development — how to recognize, shape, and act on the right opportunities If you're a founder, an innovator, or someone building something that matters — and you want frameworks that are grounded in evidence, not just anecdote — this is the right place to be. Follow along. Ask questions. Challenge the ideas. That's what Ask Dr. Brown is for. 📩 Connect or DM to explore speaking, advisory, or research collaboration. 📖 Subscribe to the Ask Dr. Brown newsletter → [Coming Soon!]

Experience

  • KTH Royal Institute of Technology (26 yrs 7 mos)
    • Professor, Technology-Based Entrepreneurship
      Dec 1999 - Present · 26 yrs 7 mos

I teach engineers and innovators how to build ventures that actually go somewhere. At KTH — consistently ranked among Europe's top technical universities — I work with founders, researchers, and students at the intersection of entrepreneurship, marketing, and innovation. My focus is on the part most programs skip: how you actually acquire resources, develop opportunities, and build a business model that holds up under real-world pressure. Beyond the classroom, I supervise doctoral research, lead the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship center at KTH, and serve as Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing — now in its 18th volume.

  • Founding Editor-in-Chief at The International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing

I built this journal from scratch because the field needed a dedicated home for research on the core drivers of entrepreneurship — opportunity, growth, and value creation. Now in its 18th volume, IJEV is ranked in Category 1 of AJG, indexed in Clarivate's Emerging Sources Citation Index, and carries both an Impact Factor and a Scopus CiteScore. It publishes peer-reviewed research from scholars across four continents and serves as a bridge between academic research, management practice, and policy. Building a journal is like building a company. You start with nothing but a conviction that something valuable is missing — and then you spend years proving it.
