As a Community Assistant at HOEM, I played a key role in supporting a vibrant student community by fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all residents. I collaborated with a dynamic team to plan, promote, and host over 20 monthly events, helping residents build connections and feel at home. I also took on-call shifts outside regular office hours, serving as the primary point of contact for student concerns ranging from maintenance to wellness-related issues. Notable achievements include successfully resolving over five roommate conflicts, earning six "High Five" peer recognition awards for outstanding service, and proposing and leading the highly successful “Culture Night,” one of the most attended events of the year. This role strengthened my skills in event planning, crisis response (First Aid and SafeTALK certified), event budgeting, social media marketing, and interpersonal communication, equipping me to support others with empathy, professionalism, and efficiency.
Part of the student governance body tasked with being the voice for the students. The "Mentor" role is the highest position a student can achieve at Uplands and is a testament to their value and efforts. We collaborated with fellow students and staff to ensure a pleasant schooling experience. This was achieved by ensuring that students were up to date on policies, events, and other expectations, as well as by proposing and implementing changes that students and staff felt would help the school move forward. As the operations lead of the team, I was tasked with recruiting any students I felt would aid me in my endeavours. Some achievements through my time as a mentor include creating a new locker tracking method, ensuring that students who owned lockers would be able to keep them for the following academic year without having to clear their belongings or get their padlocks removed. My team also managed to assist with the successful implementation of a new fire evacuation protocol. As a whole mentoring body, we were able to bring improvements to our outreach programs, provide academic tutoring opportunities, introduce a new spirit team for our school's sporting events, and increase overall student happiness from these changes.
