Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
This program builds community among Edmonton's most vulnerable populations through ball hockey. Initially a volunteer, I coordinated all game logistics- making teams, distributing equipment- while fostering a community outside of the game. I made sure all voices were heard, and that everyone in attendance could enjoy themselves, even if they have never played hockey. Over the past year, we have had over 50 participants, many of whom come only to see others. Eventually, I was able to host the program myself as I developed stronger communication skills and built familiarity with the participants and the program. To further strengthen the community, I also coordinate a yearly tournament through this program.
For four years I tutored two student athletes, initially in French immersion mathematics but as they grew older, in nearly every subject. As their needs evolved, I began teaching them skills that extended beyond school, such as time management, effective studying, and the importance of rest. As a result, their averages improved from ~60% to honours standing. Over this time, I witnessed and played a small part in their incredible growth and transformation, beyond just academics, teaching me the joy of long-term connection and mentorship.
As one of four board members, I oversaw operations of a charitable girls' school in a rural, impoverished Indian village. I collaborated with fellow board members and local educators to improve the school and organize fundraisers aimed at making the school self-sufficient. I planned and emceed fundraisers, with the most recent raising more than $80,000. I learned the importance of helping those in need, even when the results aren't directly observable, and to navigate the complexities surrounding international humanitarian aid, including how to locally advocate for causes that are distant from my community.
As a medical assistant, I welcomed patients and prepared them for appointments, measuring vitals such as height, weight, and blood pressure. When not working with patients, I performed basic administrative tasks such as filing and sorting. Currently I continue to support the clinic in a limited consulting capacity, attending weekly administrative meetings to advise on operations. I learned to carry myself with professionalism in a healthcare setting and gained insight into the importance of family medicine, and the adaptability required by family physicians to serve a diverse patient population.
