About

prof.dr.ir. Arjan van Timmeren is full professor at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Dept. Urbanism, Chair ‘Environmental Technology & Design’ Head of Section Urban Design. https://www.tudelft.nl/en/architecture-and-the-built-environment/about-the-faculty/professors/profdrir-a-van-timmeren/ The section Environmental Technology & Design (ETD) covers three important fields: the environment (humans and the living environment), technology, and design & integration, grouped around three expertise groups/themes: Urban Metabolism, Urban micro Climate and Biophilic-/Green Design & Environment related Behaviour. At different scales, however starting mainly from the perspective of the urban dynamics and of emerging theories of complexity related to this. Within this context, we search for the proper way to apply technology and nature based solutions, and their spatial integration in order to achieve significant environmental and liveability improvements, both now and in the future. Besides of the TUD chair, Arjan van Timmeren has also been (co-)founding scientific director and later Principle Investigator at AMS Institute, a joint initiative by TUD (Delft), MIT (Boston) and WUR (Wageningen) - Institute for ‘Advanced Metropolitan Solutions’ - in Amsterdam together with public and private stakeholders and citizen(platforms). Similarly from 2021 until 2025 he was Scientific Director at Resilient Delta, the Convergence initiative by Erasmus University, TUDelft and Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam. At the moment he is Academic portfolio Director at the Extension School for continuing Education and Section Head of Urban Design, Dept. of Urbanism. In summary: Over the years his work has focused on the integration of the concept of sustainable development in the field of the built environment in both practice and academia, with lately emphasis on Urban Metabolism (Green-Blue systems), CE and Biophilic and Biobased design. He is project leader of several European and national research projects and publishes regularly on these. Arjan van Timmeren has seats in several (inter)national steering groups, advisory boards, quality teams, scientific boards and is lecturing all over the globe as expert and keynote speaker. Please check ‘Ubikquity and the Illuminated City’ regarding his view on urban intelligence (https://issuu.com/laurencehenriquez/docs/ubikquity_and_the_illuminated_city) and the book regarding the specific theme of water: ‘Under Pressure: Water and the City’ (https://underpressure.online/ ).
