In December 2012 I retired from the Army after just shy of 20 years service. In September 2013 I was diagnosed with a terminal Brain Tumour. While it is looking increasingly likely that I have beaten the tumour I am now having to fight the new beast of neurological dysfunction triggered by the damage to the brain left by the tumour itself, brain surgery, brain focused radiotherapy, 12 monthly cycles of brain focused radiotherapy and each and every epileptic seizure. I have a new beast to beat and kept the name of my personal battle against the neurological dysfunction as my challenge to ‘Beat the Beast’. So by undertaking this challenge I am inviting you to sponsor me, with every penny going to the Disasters Emergency Committee, to provide encouragement while also challenging me to find the cognitive and physical capability to complete a day’s task designed to re-train the brain in order to force the brain to find a way to function more efficiently in order that I may one day get back to meaningful employment. So I continue to try and beat the neurological dysfunction and decline towards dementia through activities designed to train my brain, through strategic eating and strategic exercise while using the mediums of golf, drama, writing, music and juggling to make me stronger and better again. It is hard work but my hope is that on the brain training journey, perhaps, just perhaps one of the activities will miraculously provide a platform from which I can start to have a real impact in trying to save the lives and life chances of the billions at risk of disaster through fundraising for the DEC. I promise you that every single penny raised goes to the DEC. To learn more about my story, how I got to this point, what activities I plan to do and how to sponsor me, please see the attached document below or visit me on Facebook and learn more about the Challenge and how to sponsor me on the website, www.beatthebeastchallenge.co.uk.
The Beat the Beast Challenge is asking you to sponsor me to take on activities designed to help me Beat my Neurological Dysfunction triggered by brain damage left behind by what was a terminal Brain Tumour, my aggressive medical treatment and each and every epileptic seizure while raising money for the Disasters Emergency Committee.
