April S. Brown, Ph.D., is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. She joined Duke University as Department Chair (in ECE) in 2002 (until 2006) and was Sr. Associate Dean for Research in the Pratt School of Engineering from 2007-2011. Prior to joining Duke, she was the Pettit Professor of Microelectronics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. At Georgia Tech, she served as Associate Dean in the College of Engineering (1999-2001) and Executive Assistant to the President (2001-2002). She has worked in industry (Hughes Research Labs 1986-1993 now HRL Laboratories) in technical and management positions and was a program manager (Physics Division) at the Army Research Office (1988-1989). Her research focus is on the synthesis of semiconductor-based materials for electronic device applications. Most recently she has focused on the impact of surface and interfacial processes on the synthesis and properties of hybrid structures integrating semiconductors with metal nanoparticles, molecular overlayers, and new materials such as graphene. Professor Brown is the author of over 200 articles. She is a Fellow of both the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and of the APS (American Physical Society).
