  • Caretaker at St James Senior Boys School
    Sep 2014 - May 2016 · 1 yr 9 mos

St James Boys School is a great place to work. My team are great too! We all take pride in what we do, there's always something to do and no two days are the same. We are able to respond quickly to emergencies and nothing is too much trouble. My main role is compliance, ensuring that all regulatory checks and testing is completed, this covers emergency lights, Legionella, Gas, fire doors and call points, extractor filters, ladder inspection, Asbestos and more. I also maintain and issue the boys lockers; replacing locks, shelves and doors and ordering replacement keys. Alongside this are set ups for events and assemblies, security, painting, fixing fences, assembling furniture, installing notice boards, soap dispensers...the list goes on.... I really enjoy my work and get a great sense of achievement from fixing things and providing solutions to problems.

I managed a team of four Site Officers and five part-time minibus drivers. This involved working closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure that the school remained fully operational. I was responsible for devising the team shift rota, hiring minibuses for school matches and trips, organising minibus bookings, forward planning of all bus routes for daily student pick up and drop off; liaising with parents when any changes were made. I managed the cleaning, servicing and arranged MOTs for the school minibus fleet. I issued keys to staff and maintained the key list. I purchased supplies for the department. I attended weekly Health and Safety Meetings and maintenance team meetings. I dealt with holiday requests and held return to work interviews after sickness, held six monthly ‘one to one’ staff appraisals, wrote job descriptions, selected potential candidates and held interviews for new team members as well as overseeing their training. Issued parking permits to staff and residents. I was also responsible for overseeing contractors working on site and liaising with and assisting the outside lets.
