I am a public affairs, policy and stakeholder engagement specialist who is equally at home with managing complex lobbying campaigns as developing policy-driven communication initiatives. I know how to overcome the challenge of engaging with a host of different stakeholders from government ministers to the general public. This far-reaching knowledge has allowed me to develop and inform complex policies, and to build and execute far- reaching lobbying campaigns to inform industry legislation and environmental regulation. At the same time, I am used to be working with the media and serving as the Association spokesperson. I am a subject matter expert on scrap metal legislation, battery fires in the waste industry and other associated environmental regulations. I work with groups and associations around the world looking at promoting improved eco-design of products, the better use and recovery of resources including metals, durable plastics and critical raw materials while highlighting the sustainability of metal recycling.
As Head of Policy and Public Affairs, I lead on the policy issues, regulations and legislation faced by the industry in order to shape and influence policy decisions. This work requires me to maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the relevant Government departments, including the Environment Agency, Defra, the Home Office, BEIS, HMRC, etc. This also includes representing the sector on relevant All-Party Parliamentary Groups such as the Metal, Stone and Heritage Crime APPG for which I provide Secretariat services, and the All-Party Sustainable Resource Group. I am also the Vice-chair of the UK’s Waste Industry Health and safety Forum. Given the sector is highly regulated and facing considerable change, I am responsible for maintaining active and ongoing lobbying campaigns on behalf of our members. To do this, I have developed a deep knowledge of all the existing legislation and environment-led regulations that impact on the sector while seeking to understand and influence incoming policy and regulatory decisions. This knowledge is crucial when it comes to responding to Government consultations and when being called before Select Committees to give evidence. I also work with think tanks such as the Green Alliance to highlight relevant issues and input on publications. My role also sees me take on responsibility for the Association’s involvement in education and training, including apprenticeships, as well as Health and Safety outputs. I also oversee our Communications.
The Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum is independent, multi-party and made up of organisations from across the waste and recycling sector. The WISH steering group’s members include representatives from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), main trade associations, professional associations, trade unions, recycling organisations and national and local government bodies involved in waste management and recycling.
As an excellent copywriter, I am skilled at writing content, tailored for different audiences, that can be used online or in print.I have written content on a range of different topics from scientific articles about novel compounds to white papers on manufacturing processes. At Grey Gosling, I helped clients to develop, execute and manage marketing and communications campaigns across all mediums, including websites, social media and printed publications. I worked for dozens of companies in the healthcare industry, including Pfizer, Astellas, BMS, 3M Healthcare, Amgen, Patheon, Your Insight, Virgo Healthcare, etc. As well as managing teams of different sizes, I also garnered a great deal of experience of working alongside different stakeholders to understand and deliver on their needs. I also ran Grey Gosling’s own marketing communications strategy, including content identification and provision, all social media planning and scheduling as well as campaign analysis. As part of this, I developed a good understanding of Google’s fast-developing search algorithms.
I am based in the University's marketing and communications directorate. I am working on a range of digital communications projects, including social media campaigns and website content provision. I also provide a regular report on the progress of the campaigns using tools such as Google Analytics. At the same time, I provide support on more general communications initiatives. I have worked on DMU's prospectuses, website and even its complex and important Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) submission document.
